Who can Benefit from a Facelift?

Facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, is a popular cosmetic procedure that Dr. Weider performs. Both women and men interested in a facelift select Dr. Weider to improve the most visible signs of facial aging by:

  • Removing excess fat under the eyes, lower cheeks and jowl area
  • Tightening the skin and deeper facial tissues to improve facial sagging under the eyes and around the cheek and mouth area
  • Reducing the appearance of wrinkles in the facial area

The best candidates for a facelift will be those that are ready to address their signs of aging with a surgical procedure and are prepared for some downtime. The facelift can address the midface, but for sagging and signs of aging in the neck, talk with Dr. Weider about combining a facelift with a neck lift procedure.

The Facelift Surgery

Dr. Weider performs the facelift procedure to tighten underlying facial muscles and skin to provide a revitalized facial appearance. The time required for facelift surgery may be four or more hours, depending upon the extent of the procedure. During facelift surgery, Dr. Weider will use general anesthesia to perform the procedure. There may be variations, such as a mini facelift, that are less extensive in which local anesthesia and sedation may be used. The incisions are inconspicuous, extending behind the earlobe and into the hairline. Dr. Weider will then remove excess fat, tighten underlying facial muscles, and trim excess skin. In many patients, the muscle under the chin (platysma) will also be tightened in order to achieve a more youthful appearance of the neck and chin. A dressing will be placed around the head, which may be worn for one or two days following surgery.

Aftercare for Facelift

Dr. Weider will see you within the first few days following the procedure to help ensure a smooth recovery. After facelift surgery, you will be provided with guidelines for activity restrictions and discomfort management, including medications to ease discomfort and pain. As with all medical procedures, complications may occur during or after the procedure. The guidelines that Dr. Weider provides help to reduce the risk of such. For example, due to the increased risk of poor healing smoking causes, Dr. Weider will advise you to stop smoking for three months prior to and after the procedure. You may experience swelling, bruising, bleeding and numbness following surgery which subside over time. Other complications are rare and can usually be managed when reported to Dr. Weider in a timely fashion. Complications may include adverse reactions to anesthesia, excessive bleeding, blood clots, delayed wound healing and excessive scarring. The results of the procedure will be evident when swelling and bruising subside.

The benefits from the facelift may last for ten or more years. Facelift results may change over time, depending upon aging, weight changes, medical conditions, and certain drugs. Touch up treatment with Botox® or fillers can help maintain the results of your facelift.
