Who can Benefit from Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US. Patients at Weider Plastic Surgery in Dallas have selected breast implants to:
- Improve body contour due to small breasts
- Restore loss of breast volume after pregnancy
- Improve symmetry for women with different sized breasts
To be a successful candidate for breast augmentation, the breasts must be fully developed. Breast augmentation can improve the size of your breasts, but if sagging is present, Dr. Weider may recommend a breast lift or breast augmentation and lift combination.
Breast Implant Options
Breast augmentation is highly customizable, allowing you to choose the material, texture, size, and shape of your implants. Dr. Weider offers several different implant materials for you to choose from including:
- Saline: Saline implants are composed of sterile salt water in a silicone shell. Saline can be safely absorbed by the body in the rare event of a rupture.
- Silicone: Silicone implants are composed of silicone gel that closely mimics the natural feel and movement of breast tissue.
- IDEAL Implant: The IDEAL implant is composed of saline fill material with a multi-chamber silicone shell This allows patients to combine the safety of saline with the natural look and feel of silicone.
There are benefits and drawbacks to each implant option. The implant type that is best for you will depend on your personal goals, concerns, and body type. Dr. Weider will go over all of your breast implant and surgical options during your consultation.
Breast Augmentation Surgery
Dr. Weider will perform breast augmentation to increase breast size and to create better body proportions. Breast augmentation typically takes ninety minutes to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. An incision will be made along the breast crease, within the underarm, and/or around the areola. During surgery, Dr. Weider will dissect the breast pocket so that the breast implant may naturally fit into place. Dr. Weider’s careful technique using direct visualization minimizes the chance that you will have any long-term numbness of the breast. In some cases, the nipple size and shape may be refined to better fit the newly sized breasts.
Aftercare for Breast Augmentation
Dr. Weider will see you within the first few days following surgery to guide you through recovery. You may experience some discomfort, which can be eased with medication. Within two days, you’ll most likely be comfortable performing some normal activities. Within five days or so, most patient will be able to return to work. You will be required to take precautions in the days following surgery to reduce the risk of complications. You will need to wear a surgical bra, refrain from certain activities, and provide care to incisions. Should you experience any discomfort, swelling or bruising, these should subside in the weeks following surgery. In addition to routine screening for breast cancer with mammography, it may be recommended that periodic MRI and/or ultrasound be performed to evaluate the condition of the breast implants.
Complications are rare but may occur in some cases. Complications include capsular contracture (scar tissue tightening around the breast implant), excessive bleeding, infection, nipple sensitivity, breast numbness, and leak or rupture of the breast implant (may be unnoticeable in silicone implants). Complications can usually be managed by Dr. Weider, but it is important to remember that the risk of complications is reduced by following pre and post-operative instructions.
Breast augmentation provides an immediate benefit with renewed shapeliness and increased breast size. Many women experience life-changing satisfaction following the breast augmentation procedure, including better-fitted clothing, enhanced sexual gratification, and improved self-image. After breast augmentation, Dr. Weider’s patients enjoy numerous benefits that last for many years to come.
