Eyelid Surgery: Before and After

Statistics shown by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons indicate close to one half million women and men have had eyelid surgery performed in the past two years. Both women and men turn to Dr. Weider for the benefit of facial rejuvenation from eyelid surgery or to improve a medical condition that impairs vision, including:

  • Reduce the appearance of wrinkles surrounding the eyes
  • Improve under eye bags and sagging below the eyes
  • Improve crow’s feet and laugh lines surrounding the eyes
  • Improve hooded upper eyelids

Dr. Weider performs eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, for women and men who desire to improve the appearance and/or functionality of the eyelids. Many people interested in eyelid surgery desire a more youthful appearance. Dr. Weider combines artistry and refined technique to rejuvenate the eyelids. During your personal consultation with Dr. Weider, you will learn about every aspect of the eyelid procedure including:

  • Technique involved in the procedure
  • How skin elasticity and bone structure may affect the procedure
  • Anesthesia
  • Facility choices such as our fully accredited facility and surgical center
  • Guidelines to reduce the risk of complications
  • Costs for eyelid surgery, including: surgeon’s fees, anesthesia fees, and facility fees

The Surgery

Dr. Weider performs eyelid surgery to redefine eyelids for a natural, youthful appearance. The time required for eyelid surgery may be one or more hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. During eyelid surgery, Dr. Weider may create an incision on the inside of the lower lid, which will leave no visible scar, and/or in the upper eyelid creases. Then he will remove excess skin and fat and tighten muscle, if necessary. Finally, he will suture the incisions together.

Aftercare for eyelid Surgery

Dr. Weider will see you in the days following the procedure to help ensure a smooth recovery. You will be provided with guidelines for activity restrictions and discomfort management, including medications to ease pain. You will receive patient comfort tips such as soaking gauze pads in ice chips so they may be applied to the eyes for greater comfort.

As with all medical procedures, complications may occur during or after the procedure. The guidelines provided by Dr. Weider help to reduce the risk of complications. For example, smoking increases the risk of poor healing. So, Dr. Weider will advise you to quit smoking for fours to six weeks prior to and after the procedure. You may experience swelling, bruising, bleeding and numbness following surgery, which subsides over time. Complications are rare and can usually be managed by Dr. Weider. Complications may include: adverse anesthesia reaction, excessive bleeding, asymmetry between the eyes, and inability to fully close the eyes (usually temporary).

Most people return to work within one week to ten days following the procedure. At that time, the results of the procedure will be evident and may last a lifetime. Of course, the longevity of the procedure may be affected by aging, poor lifestyle habits, skincare regimen, medical conditions and the use of certain drugs. If you decide to select the procedure for the upper eyelid, lower eyelid or both eyelids, the surgery will most certainly provide rejuvenation for many years to follow.
